Reinsurance broker

You act for the cedant: structure their reinsurance programme, place it with a panel of reinsurers by written line, earn brokerage, and run the technical accounting — including splitting bordereaux across the panel.

Best use case

A reinsurance broker placing proportional (quota-share / surplus) or non-proportional (excess-of-loss) programmes to a subscription market of reinsurers, who needs a signed-line panel, brokerage recognised on bind, the placing/cover/closing paperwork, and per-reinsurer bordereaux allocation.

Before you start

  1. Add the cedant and reinsurers
CRM → Accounts. The cedant (the insurer buying protection) and each reinsurer on your security list are accounts. Written lines are recorded against the reinsurer accounts.

Structure the programme

Everything lives on the programme record under Reinsurance → Programmes.

  1. Create the programme
Capture the cedant, type (quota share / surplus / excess-of-loss), line of business, currency, period, estimated premium income (EPI) and your brokerage %.
  2. Add sections / layers
For proportional business add sections; for excess-of-loss add layers (attachment, limit, premium). These define the structure the market subscribes to and the premium base.

Best practice

Set the EPI at structuring — it drives the premium the panel shares and your brokerage. If you leave it blank, the programme falls back to the sum of section premiums.

Broke it — the signed-line panel

  1. Add reinsurer participations
As each reinsurer commits, add its written line %. The programme tracks the placed % and shows, live, each reinsurer's premium and net share (via the programme maths).
  2. Walk the status
Structuring → Marketing → Placed → Bound. The status reflects where the placement is; you bind once the panel is complete.
  3. Bind — booking code + brokerage
On Bound, iqava issues a booking code (BKB-YYYY-NNNN) — the Credit-Control handoff key — and auto-accrues your brokerage to the one general ledger (idempotent). The programme shows its booking code thereafter.

Tip

The booking code is searchable across the platform — Credit Control finds the programme by code to process its accounting, exactly like treaties and policies.

Broking documents

Generate the market paperwork from the structured programme + panel (stored in Documents with reference, issue/void and audit):

  • Placing slip — the programme structure + sections/layers taken to market.
  • Cover note — confirmation to the cedant of the placed panel (written lines + placed %).
  • Closing statement — the per-reinsurer premium share, brokerage and net.

Panel bordereaux allocation

When a bordereaux comes in for the programme, allocate it across the panel by written line. On the bordereaux record, link it to the programme, then the allocation splits its premium, commission and claims across each reinsurer by signed line, with the net due (premium − commission − claims) per reinsurer and totals.

Why this matters

This is the distinctive reinsurance-broker job — turning one cedant submission into each reinsurer's exact share, ready to render as their statement.

Panel allocation — 10M premium / 2.5M commission / 3M claims across Swiss Re 60% + Munich Re 40%

Swiss Re (60%)prem 6,000,000 · comm 1,500,000 · claims 1,800,000 · net 2,700,000
Munich Re (40%)prem 4,000,000 · comm 1,000,000 · claims 1,200,000 · net 1,800,000
Total net due (100% placed)KES 4,500,000

Best practices — recap

  • Structure sections/layers and set the EPI before marketing, so the panel maths is right from the start.
  • Record each written line as you get it; watch the placed % to full placement.
  • Bind to issue the booking code and recognise brokerage — don't track brokerage on the side.
  • Issue the cover note to the cedant and the closing to the market.
  • Link inbound bordereaux to the programme so each reinsurer's share is computed, not hand-split.
